Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan resigns

Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has resigned and Md Ashfaqul Islam of Supreme Court Appellate Division has become the acting Chief Justice.

Sources from the Law Ministry informed this around 2:30 pm on Saturday (August 10).

Justice Ashfaqul Islam was appointed as a district court lawyer in 1983. In 1985, he became a lawyer of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. On August 27, 2003, Ashfaqul Islam was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division. On August 27, 2005, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the High Court Division. On December 8, 2022, he took oath as a judge of the Appellate Division.

Justice Ashfaqul Islam is serving as the chairman of the Enrollment Committee of the Bangladesh Bar Council, a regulatory and supervisory body for lawyers.

Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan resigned in the face of student protests.

“He submitted his resignation letter to the Law Ministry,” said Dr Asif Nazrul, law, and parliamentary affairs adviser to the i8nterim government.
In his office in the Secretariat, the law adviser told reporters, “I will sign it and send the file to chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus. He will forward it to the President subject to his consent. It will come into effect if the President accepts it.”
