Chief Justice to deliver farewell address tomorrow

Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed will deliver his farewell address on Sunday, December 14, ahead of his retirement on December 27.

According to a press release issued on Saturday, December 13, an important session will be held at the Supreme Court auditorium at 3:00pm on Sunday with senior judicial officers working in district courts across the country.

During the session, the Chief Justice will deliver his farewell address to all district judges, metropolitan sessions judges, chief judicial magistrates and chief metropolitan magistrates.

Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed assumed office as the country’s 25th Chief Justice following the July–August student-mass uprising. He took oath as Chief Justice on August 11, 2024.

A former student of Dhaka University, Syed Refaat Ahmed obtained a first-class law degree from Wadham College, University of Oxford. He later completed his master’s and PhD at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States and worked with UNHCR as an immigration law specialist.

He enrolled as a lawyer at the Dhaka District Court in 1984 and at the High Court Division in 1986. On April 27, 2003, he was appointed an additional judge of the High Court and became a permanent judge two years later.

Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed is the son of eminent lawyer and former attorney general Barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed and Ekushey Padak-winning language movement veteran Dr Sufia Ahmed, Bangladesh’s first female national professor.
