China reiterates commitment to help Bangladesh on Teesta project
China has reiterated its commitment to continue to help Bangladesh implement the Teesta River Project. China's ambassador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, said that China will work on the Teesta project only if Bangladesh formally requests it.
He made this statement at a press conference organized at the Chinese embassy in the capital on Thursday (July 2) on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China.
Yao Wen said that China will work on the Teesta project as requested by Bangladesh. There has been no change in China's position on the project.
He also said that China will continue to help Bangladesh on the Teesta project within its capabilities. Beijing's position on this issue remains the same and they are not considering any other issues.
The ambassador said that relations between the two countries have further strengthened after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to China. Both countries are working to increase cooperation on various development and infrastructure projects.
The Teesta River Management and Development Project is considered one of the most important projects in preventing river erosion, expanding irrigation facilities and improving water management in northern Bangladesh. China has maintained its previous position on cooperation in the implementation of this project, the country's ambassador said.
