China, UK congratulate President Mirza Fakhrul Islam
China and the United Kingdom have congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected President of Bangladesh. The Chinese Embassy and the British High Commission in Dhaka conveyed congratulations to him through separate messages after the announcement of the presidential election results on Thursday (August 20).
A congratulatory post for Mirza Fakhrul was published on the verified Facebook page of the Chinese Embassy 15 minutes after the announcement of the presidential election results. The British High Commission conveyed congratulations in the same manner 15 minutes later.
Voting for the presidential election was held from 2pm to 5pm on Thursday. Chief Election Commissioner announced the results at 5:20pm. BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the election with 255 votes. His rival candidate of the 11-party alliance Oli Ahmed got 88 votes.
In the congratulatory message after the result announcement the Chinese Embassy said China attaches great importance to its relations with Bangladesh. Beijing is ready to work closely to build a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future through joint efforts in this new era. China expressed hope that both countries and their peoples will greatly benefit from this.
The British High Commission said it extends heartfelt congratulations to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected President of Bangladesh. The United Kingdom looks forward to working with President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the government of Bangladesh to further strengthen the close and long-standing partnership between the two countries.
