Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen meets Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal

Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a farewell call on Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday (September 22), with the two sides discussing bilateral ties, parliamentary exchanges and Chinese-backed development projects.

Kaiser Kamal welcomed Yao Wen and praised the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and China.

Recalling his recent visit to China’s Yunnan province, he appreciated the hospitality and cooperation extended to the Bangladeshi delegation and thanked China for its support for Bangladesh’s development.

The deputy speaker said Bangladesh is keen to further expand Chinese cooperation in technology, healthcare, infrastructure and other sectors, while strengthening democratic institutions and improving people’s living standards.

Yao Wen highlighted the historical ties between the two countries, recalling former president Ziaur Rahman’s 1980 visit to China as an important milestone in strengthening bilateral relations.

He also referred to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China, saying it could open new areas for bilateral cooperation.

The outgoing envoy stressed the role of parliamentary friendship groups in deepening legislative ties, including through reciprocal visits, experience-sharing and greater exchanges between lawmakers.

The two sides also discussed expanding people-to-people contacts and cooperation.

The meeting covered the expansion and modernisation of facilities at Mongla Port and the Teesta River project. Yao Wen thanked the deputy speaker and the people of Bangladesh for their cooperation during his tenure and expressed hope that bilateral friendship would grow further.

Chinese Deputy Ambassador and senior officials were also present.
