Chinmoy Das gets bail in two more cases
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, has secured bail from the High Court in two additional cases. However, he will not be released from jail immediately as several other cases against him remain pending.
A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Sunday, making absolute a rule issued earlier on the bail question .
Previously, on August 3, the same bench granted him bail in two other cases involving vandalism, attack and obstruction of government duty. With this, he has now received High Court bail in four cases .
Chinmoy's lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said his client faces a total of six criminal cases. His bail in the sedition case remains stayed, while the trial in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif is currently underway at the Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal .
Legal proceedings against Chinmoy began with a sedition case filed on October 31, 2024, at Chattogram's Kotwali Police Station over alleged disrespect to the national flag . He was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, and has been in jail since November 26 .
The following day, his bail plea was rejected, and amid clashes between his supporters and law enforcers near the court, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was beaten and hacked to death . Alif's father later filed a murder case, and Chinmoy was subsequently shown arrested in that case and several others .
He is also accused in cases involving attempted murder, attacks on lawyers and litigants, obstruction of official duties, and cocktail explosions .
