Cloudy skies, thunderstorms loom over Dhaka today

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast rain and thundershowers in Dhaka and surrounding areas on Friday (August 21), with cloudy skies likely to keep temperatures slightly lower during the day.

According to the weather office’s six-hour forecast issued at 7am, parts of the capital may experience isolated rain or thundershowers until noon. The sky may remain partly cloudy to cloudy during the period.

Winds may blow from the south or southeast at 10-15kmph, with speeds potentially increasing during rainfall, the forecast said.

Dhaka recorded 28.4°C at 6am, while relative humidity stood at 89 percent. The highest temperature recorded in the capital on Thursday was 34.4°C. Rainfall over the previous 24 hours was only a trace.

No warning signal has been issued for the country’s inland river ports for the period from 5am to 1pm Friday.

The weather office’s broader forecast said many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, as well as some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions, could experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds.

Some areas may also receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while day and night temperatures across the country are likely to remain largely unchanged.
