A rally by leaders and activists of the banned Awami League was held in the capital’s Dhanmondi-27 area on Sunday afternoon, during which a cocktail explosion was reportedly heard.

According to eyewitnesses, the rally began around 3:30 PM, with a group of Awami League supporters marching through the area. Shortly after the procession started, a crude explosive device, commonly known as a cocktail, was detonated. No injuries were reported.

The rally was dispersed within a short time, and the participants fled the scene before police could arrive.

Speaking to reporters, Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kashainyu Marma said, “We were informed about a rally at Dhanmondi-27 around 3:45 PM. By the time officers reached the location, no one was present. We’ve also received reports of a cocktail explosion, but this has not yet been confirmed. We are investigating the matter thoroughly.”

Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence to identify those involved and determine whether an explosive device was indeed detonated.
