Cold wave may intensify from Thursday
The Meteorological Department has warned that Bangladesh may experience another cold wave starting Thursday (January 15). Northern and western regions could face a new cold spell with temperatures drop by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius during this period.
On Wednesday (14 January) morning, the Meteorological Department reported that a cold wave is currently affecting Panchagarh. The ongoing cold wave, which has lasted over ten days, has today limited its spread to a smaller area. Panchagarh’s Tetulia recorded the country’s lowest temperature at 8°C today, following readings around 7–8°C over the past few days.
The Meteorological Department classifies cold waves based on minimum temperatures: mild (8.1–10°C), moderate (6.1–8°C), severe (4.1–6°C), and extreme below 4°C. Senior meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Malik noted that northern and western regions may experience intensified cold from Thursday to Saturday, after which temperatures are likely to rise gradually.
Meanwhile, the capital also felt slightly colder, with Dhaka recording a minimum temperature of 15.6°C today. According to earlier long-term forecasts, Bangladesh could experience a total of five cold waves this January, including one potentially severe spell.
