Commitment signed to safeguard July Uprising leaders: Home Minister
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday (March 1) reaffirmed that the Ministry of Home Affairs is committed to providing legal and constitutional protection to individuals who led or participated in the July mass uprising.
Speaking at a briefing after meeting Fire Service and Civil Defence officials at the Secretariat, the minister said all decisions regarding the matter will be guided by the signed commitment.
He added that he has not yet commented on investigations into police personnel killed during the July events.
Salahuddin Ahmed noted that a protection ordinance was issued during the final phase of the caretaker government, based on the July National Accord, and received consensus from all political parties at the time.
On the military presence in the field, the minister said the duration of deployment will be decided at the highest level. He added that the army itself prefers a limited field presence to avoid disruption to training and other operations, but withdrawal will eventually occur.
Addressing calls to change the Rapid Action Battalion’s (RAB) name and uniform, the minister said the issue is being considered as part of public demand and political consensus. Decisions will be based on practical realities to ensure the force remains effective, transparent, and capable of delivering optimal service.
