Commonwealth mourns Osman Hadi, expresses concern over Bangladesh situation
The Commonwealth has expressed deep sorrow at the death of july mass uprising fighter and Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Shaheed Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, while also voicing concern over Bangladesh's recent situation.
In a statement on November 20, Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Bochowe conveyed her condolences and shared her anxiety regarding the current circumstances in Bangladesh.
In the statement, the Commonwealth Secretary-General said she shares in the grief of the people of Bangladesh over the death of Sharif Osman Hadi and extends her heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. In light of the recent violent incidents in Dhaka and other parts of the country, she also expressed deep concern about the present situation in Bangladesh.
She further stated that she urges the government of Bangladesh to respect the rule of law and ensure the safety of all citizens, including media professionals. She welcomed the interim government's commitment to holding those involved in violence to account. At the same time, she expressed support for calls for restraint, responsible behaviour, and the avoidance of hatred. She emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and showing maximum patience and wisdom during this critical time.
Meanwhile, Sharif Osman Hadi was buried at the cemetery of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on the University of Dhaka campus at around 3:20 pm on Saturday. He was injured by shots fired by miscreants in the city's Bijanagar area on December 12. After seven consecutive days of hospital treatment, he passed away in Singapore on Thursday night while receiving medical care.
As news of his death spread, agitated crowds in various parts of the country engaged in incidents of vandalism and arson.
