Communal violence will not be tolerated, will resign if necessary: Religious Affairs Minister
Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Houssain (Kaikobad) has issued a stern warning that persecution against minorities or followers of other religions will not be tolerated in the country. He has stated that he would resign as minister if necessary rather than accept injustice against minorities.
The minister made these remarks as chief guest at 'BSRF Dialogue', organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum at the Secretariat's media centre on Monday, May 11. BSRF President Masudul Haque presided over the event, with General Secretary Ubaidullah Badal conducting it.
Responding to a question about attacks and persecution on Muslims in West Bengal, India, the minister said India is a large democratic country. While he praised India's democratic practices, he emphasised ensuring the security of minorities.
"I respect India. But I will respect it more if they embrace minorities, ensure their security, and provide them with all opportunities as equal citizens of the state," the minister said.
"Whatever happens in India, its impact will not be allowed to fall on Bangladesh. Persecution against any minority or follower of other religions will not be tolerated here. If necessary, I will resign from the ministry, but I will not accept injustice," he said.
When asked whether the Bangladesh government would take any diplomatic initiative regarding the security of Muslims in West Bengal, the minister said the government is considering the matter seriously and may take necessary steps in this regard.
