The National Parliament has unanimously adopted a condolence motion over the death of Qatar's former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar.

Chief Whip Md Noorul Islam moved the condolence motion on Tuesday, July 14, which was passed by voice vote in the parliament chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal.

The condolence motion stated that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on July 12 at the age of 74. He was one of the most visionary statesmen of the contemporary world. Under his leadership, Qatar achieved significant progress in education, health, energy, infrastructure, economy, international diplomacy and human resource development, transforming into a modern and prosperous state. This is why he was recognised worldwide as the 'architect of modern Qatar.'

The Chief Whip said that under Sheikh Hamad's leadership, bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Qatar were further strengthened. His contributions to the employment of Bangladeshi workers, economic cooperation and mutual development of the two countries would be remembered.

He also noted that during the recent Middle East crisis, Qatar stood by Bangladeshi workers despite facing various challenges domestically. The country also provided humanitarian assistance to Bangladeshi sailors during the Hormuz Strait crisis. For this, Bangladesh expresses deep gratitude to Qatar.

The motion also sought forgiveness for the departed soul and expressed deep condolences to the current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Qatar royal family, government and people.

The Chief Whip also recommended observing state mourning and keeping the national flag at half-mast. He also proposed sending a certified copy of the condolence motion to Qatar's Shura Council, the Qatar embassy in Bangladesh and the Qatar government.

After the motion was adopted, MP Mohammad Shamim Kayser from Gaibandha-4 constituency conducted a prayer seeking forgiveness for the departed soul.
