Corridor to cut Bangladesh-China trade time to 24 hours: Commerce Minister

If Bangladesh is connected to the China-Myanmar corridor, goods can be transported from Bangladesh to China by truck within 24 hours, Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a workshop and welcome ceremony for newly enrolled lawyers at the Sylhet District Lawyers' Association on Saturday, June 27.

The minister said significant Chinese investment will be seen in the country in the coming days. "China has already made all our products duty-free. The only possible way we are following is to attract more and more Chinese investment to Bangladesh," he said.

Regarding the management committee of Hazrat Shahjalal (Rah.) shrine, the minister said no one was appointed to the committee based on political considerations. The committee has been formed according to regulations, and there is no scope for debate over it.

Earlier, speaking as the chief guest at the lawyers' event, the minister said when an environment of impunity is created in a state, the social contract and the rule of law become weakened. Lawyers play a leading role in implementing the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution — equality, non-discrimination, life and personal liberty, freedom of expression and other civil rights.

The event was presided over by Sylhet District Lawyers' Association President Advocate Golam Yahya Chowdhury (Suhel) and conducted by General Secretary Advocate Md Jubayer Bakht Jubayer. Among others, Acting District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Erfan Ullah, Divisional Special Judge M Ali Ahmad, Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Hasam Imam, Senior Judicial Magistrate Sudipto Talukder and Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam spoke.
