Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman has expressed disappointment over the position of Bangladeshi universities in global rankings, saying the country is yet to achieve the expected standard in higher education, research, and innovation.

“Whether our universities are maintaining global standards in education and research is a question frequently raised in discussions. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, we are still far behind in global university rankings in terms of research, publication, and innovation,” he said.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (12 May) while inaugurating a day-long workshop titled “Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence” at the Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University, organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Prime Minister noted that global ranking systems largely depend on research output, citations, and innovation. “We must seriously evaluate where we stand in these areas. Without stronger focus on research and innovation, it will be difficult to remain competitive globally,” he said.

Stressing education reform, he added that the government aims to prevent brain drain while nurturing talent to build the nation. “We want to create an education system where every student can fully utilise their potential. Reforming curricula from primary to higher education is now a necessity,” he said.

He also highlighted unemployment among graduates, noting that a lack of skills alongside academic qualifications remains a key challenge. “Many students complete higher education but still remain unemployed. Skill development alongside academic learning is essential to reduce unemployment,” he said.

Referring to global practices, the Prime Minister said many universities abroad benefit from alumni support in research and innovation. “Alumni are the backbone of universities, while students are its lifeblood,” he remarked, urging Bangladeshi alumni to contribute to their institutions.

Calling for collective efforts to build a “knowledge- and innovation-based society,” he said the government is committed to creating a safe and progressive Bangladesh for present and future generations, driven by democratic values and youth aspirations.

He also paid tribute to the role of young people in democratic movements, saying the nation has achieved its current democratic transition through long struggles and sacrifices.
