Rain and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely to continue across parts of Bangladesh over the next five days, with heavy rainfall forecast in some areas, particularly in the Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In its 120-hour forecast issued, the BMD said an extension of a western low-pressure area is currently positioned over the northern Bay of Bengal, influencing weather conditions across the country on Saturday evening.

For the 24 hours from 6pm Saturday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are expected at a few places in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions.

Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations in Chattogram and Sylhet during this period. Day and night temperatures may rise slightly across the country.

A similar weather pattern is expected on Sunday, with rain or thundershowers likely in parts of Chattogram and Sylhet and at isolated places elsewhere. Heavy rainfall remains possible in some areas of the two divisions, while temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.

Rain or thunderstorms are forecast in parts of Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places in other regions on Monday. Sylhet division may experience moderately heavy to heavy rainfall.

The BMD said showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds are also likely on Tuesday in parts of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with heavy rainfall possible in Chattogram and Sylhet. Daytime temperatures may rise slightly, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.

Rain or thunderstorms may occur in parts of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at isolated places elsewhere in the country on Wednesday. Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is possible in some areas.

The weather office also noted that the southwest monsoon may advance up to the Teknaf coast during the extended forecast period, potentially increasing rainfall activity across the country.
