A court has imposed a travel ban on Mohammad Ejaz, administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation, as investigations into allegations of corruption, bribery and various irregularities are ongoing.

The order was issued on Sunday, February 1, by the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court of Md Sabbir Fayez following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission. The information was confirmed by court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain.

The application for the travel ban was filed by ACC assistant director Md Ashiqur Rahman. It stated that allegations of large-scale corruption, irregularities and bribery through abuse of power against the administrator are under investigation.

The allegations against Mohammad Ejaz include irregularities related to leasing of the Mirpur Gabtoli cattle market, the e-rickshaw project, control of Borak Tower or Hotel Sheraton, allocation of shops at Banani kitchen market, construction and allocation of shops at the parking area of Khilgaon Taltola Super Market, operation of city corporation van services and allocation of footpath shops, among others.

The ACC further stated that although notices were issued to record his statement in accordance with commission laws and regulations, he did not appear at the ACC office. Reliable sources indicated that he might attempt to leave the country, creating concern that a proper investigation could be hampered. Therefore, a travel ban was deemed necessary in the interest of a fair investigation.

After the hearing, the court accepted the ACC’s application and imposed a ban on Mohammad Ejaz from leaving the country.
