A Dhaka court has deferred the hearing on a petition seeking to show former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque arrested in a fresh case over attempted murder and alleged violations of the Explosives Act linked to the July Uprising 2024.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah fixed 8 July for the hearing after the relevant case documents were not produced before the court, prosecution division Sub-Inspector Mokter Hossain said.

The matter will now be heard virtually on July 8, he said.

The petition was filed on July 2 by the investigating officer of the case, SI Saiful Islam of Banani Police Station.

According to the case statement, on August 4, 2024, demonstrators marching from the Setu Bhaban area in Mohakhali toward Shahbagh allegedly came under attack, with gunfire, cocktails and crude explosives reportedly used against them. At least 25 to 30 people, including Ujjal Mia, were injured.

Following the incident, Ujjal Mia filed a case with Banani Police Station under charges of attempted murder and the Explosives Act.

Khairul Haque was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year and was later shown arrested in a murder case over the killing of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad during the July uprising. Subsequently, he was shown arrested in seven more cases.

Although he has secured bail in all eight existing cases against him, police have now sought to show him arrested in this fresh attempted murder and explosives case.
