Court issues arrest warrant against former SP Jahirul Islam in rape case

A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against OSD-listed Additional DIG and former Magura Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Jahirul Islam in a case filed over allegations of rape on the false promise of marriage.

Judge Muntasir Ahmed of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 passed the order on Monday (July 27) after hearing the case, confirmed by the complainant's counsel, Advocate Md Azmat Hossain.

According to court sources, the tribunal accepted the investigation report submitted by the investigating officer, which stated that prima facie evidence supporting the allegations had been found. As Jahirul Islam was absent during the hearing, the court took the report into cognisance and issued the arrest warrant.

According to the case statement, the complainant became acquainted with Jahirul Islam in January 2021, when he was serving as the Superintendent of Police in Magura. The complaint alleges that he developed a personal relationship with her, promised to divorce his former wife and marry her, and later established physical relations on multiple occasions after assuring her of marriage.

The complainant further alleged that despite repeatedly reaffirming his promise after being transferred to Police Headquarters, Jahirul Islam refused to marry her on July 13, 2025, and allegedly threatened her when she sought legal action.

The woman subsequently filed a general diary (GD) with Bhatara Police Station and submitted a written complaint to the Inspector General of Police (IGP). After efforts to resolve the matter outside court failed, she filed the case before the tribunal.

The tribunal later ordered a judicial inquiry. On July 14, Special Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmudul Haque submitted an inquiry report stating that the allegations had prima facie merit, leading the tribunal to proceed with the case and issue the arrest warrant.
