Court orders seizure of tax records of former DB chief Harun’s brother
A court in Dhaka has ordered the seizure of income tax records belonging to A.B.M. Shahariar, brother of former Detective Branch (DB) chief Mohammad Harun Or Rashid.
The order was issued by Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Fayez following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), according to the court’s bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain on Tuesday (May 19).
ACC Deputy Director Muhammad Zainal Abedeen submitted the application seeking the seizure of Shahariar’s tax documents.
According to the petition, A.B.M. Shahariar, managing director of President Resort and Agro Limited, allegedly acquired and possessed assets worth Tk 129.69 million beyond known sources of income.
The application further alleged that former DB chief Mohammad Harun Or Rashid abused his authority while serving in important police positions to assist Shahariar in committing the offence.
The ACC told the court that seizing and reviewing all income tax returns and related documents was essential for a proper investigation into the case.
After the hearing, the court granted the application.
Earlier, on December 17, 2024, the ACC filed a case accusing Harun Or Rashid of acquiring illegal wealth worth Tk 175.1 million. His wife, Shirin Akter, was accused of amassing illegal assets worth Tk 107.6 million, while his brother A.B.M. Shahariar was accused of possessing illegal assets worth Tk 129.6 million.
