Crowds throng National Memorial on Independence Day

People from all walks of life thronged the National Memorial in Savar on Thursday to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War on the occasion of the Great Independence Day. From morning, the entire area was filled with the presence of people of all ages, from children to the elderly, holding red and green flags.

From the early hours of March 26, thousands of people began arriving at the memorial in processions. Patriotic slogans and songs raised by them made the atmosphere emotionally charged. Many observed silence after paying respects with flowers.

Abdur Rahman, who came from Shimulia area of Ashulia with his family, said they have an independent country because of the sacrifices made during the Liberation War. So on this day, he brought his wife and children to pay tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters.

A university student who came to the memorial with friends said he believes the spirit of independence faces various challenges in the present time. His emotions on this day are therefore even more intense.

Earlier in the morning, President Md Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute to the martyrs by laying wreaths. A smart contingent of the armed forces presented a state salute, and a sombre tune was played on bugles. After observing silence for a while, they left the premises.

After the President and Prime Minister paid their tributes, the memorial was opened to the public, and people from all walks of life poured in.
