Cultural program on International Mother Language Day at Natmandal
A colorful cultural program is going to be held on the premises of Dhaka University's Natmandal on the occasion of International Mother Language Day on February 21 at 7pm. Students of the university's Department of Theatre and Performance Studies are organizing this event to show their respect and love for the language martyrs.
On February 21, 1952, numerous strugglers, including students of Dhaka University, were martyred while protesting for the demand of Bengali. In memory of their sacrifice and to protect the dignity of the mother language, UNESCO recognized February 21 as "International Mother Language Day" in 1999.
One of the attractions of the program will be a wall magazine prepared with the spontaneous participation of the students, which will contain poems, essays, memoirs and drawings. In addition, a documentary on the historical context of the language movement, the sacrifice of the martyrs and the struggle to protect the dignity of the mother language will be added.
Drama, poetry, songs and dance will be performed as part of the cultural performance. As a special attraction, Momtazuddin Ahmed's play 'Bibah' will be staged. The play will be directed by Shahi Farzana Tanjim Mimi, a third-year, sixth-semester student of the Department of Theater and Performance Studies.
In addition, patriotic songs, recitations and dances will be performed with the participation of students and teachers. The program will feature the immortal songs of Ekushey, and the history and sacrifices of the language movement will be remembered through poetry.
The organizers said that the program will be conducted with discipline and beauty and will end with a tribute to the language martyrs and a reaffirmation of the pledge to protect the dignity of the mother tongue. According to them, this is not just a cultural program, but a unique attempt to convey the spirit of the language movement to the new generation.
