Cyber capability, indigenous tech innovation must be prioritised: Defence Adviser

Prime Minister's Defence Adviser Brigadier General (retd) A K M Shamsul Islam has said that a new momentum must be created in enhancing cyber capabilities and developing indigenous technology to ensure national security. He emphasised the translation of research outcomes into patents, usable technologies and domestically produced goods.

He made these remarks during a visit to the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka's Mirpur Cantonment on Monday (July 20).

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the Defence Adviser was briefed on MIST's cyber range, research activities, patents and technological innovations during the visit. He placed importance on enhancing cyber capabilities to tackle cyber threats, create skilled manpower and ensure the security of the country's critical digital infrastructure.

He said in today's world, a nation's security is not confined to geographical borders; the security of information, communication systems and critical digital infrastructure is also an essential part of national security. He called for effective coordination among educational institutions, government agencies and the domestic technology sector.

As part of the visit, the Defence Adviser exchanged views with members of MIST's internationally award-winning 'Metro' team. The team recently became champions among 77 teams from 16 countries at an international underwater robot competition in Canada.

Shamsul Islam said research success should not be limited to exhibitions but must be transformed into practical technologies and indigenous products. This would enhance the country's technological capacity, reduce foreign dependence and create new employment opportunities.

He also called for expanding research in public welfare, disaster management, cyber security, health, agriculture and industrial sectors, alongside increasing research, training and institutional support for young innovators.
