DCU temporary solution, permanent resolution to be discussed soon: Education Minister
The formation of Dhaka Central University (DCU) comprising seven colleges is a temporary solution, and discussions with stakeholders for a permanent resolution of the crisis will be held soon, said Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon.
He made these remarks during a views-exchange meeting with officials and employees of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday, March 4.
The education minister said that universities must go beyond mere oversight of activities and formulate integrated plans on their own initiative. Emphasis must be placed on introducing skill and demand-based curricula in the country's universities to develop human resources suited to the demands of the global job market.
Describing the UGC as the focal point of higher education in the country, the minister said the success and failure of higher education depend on the UGC. The higher education sector in the country is expanding. He instructed the UGC to properly monitor and advance the activities of the country's universities. He also requested that the UGC's achievements since 2024 and future action plans be submitted in writing to the Ministry of Education.
Regarding university rankings, he said the quality of education and research in the country's universities is gradually declining, which is a major problem. The country does not have a single internationally standard university. Efforts must be made to establish at least one quality postgraduate university.
