Debashish Roy Chowdhury sworn in as permanent High Court judge

Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury was sworn in as a permanent judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday (September 24).

Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury administered the oath at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge, with judges from both the High Court and Appellate divisions attending the ceremony.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir appointed Debashish as a permanent High Court judge on Monday in consultation with the chief justice under Article 95 of the Constitution.

The Law Ministry subsequently issued a gazette notification on the appointment.

Debashish was appointed an additional judge of the High Court Division on October 8, 2024. While other additional judges appointed alongside him were made permanent in November 2025, his confirmation was delayed as he had not yet met the applicable age requirement of 45. He was made permanent after fulfilling the requirement.

After earning a higher law degree in the United Kingdom, he enrolled as a district court advocate in 2005, a High Court advocate in 2007 and an Appellate Division advocate in 2018.

Debashish is the eldest son of Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury. His appointment brings the number of permanent judges in the High Court Division to 100.
