Deep depression to intensify rainfall, heavier showers likely along coast

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger increased rainfall across Bangladesh from Monday (July 27), with southern coastal districts likely to receive the heaviest showers, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

However, the system is unlikely to have any major direct impact on the country, meteorologists said.

In a special weather bulletin issued Monday morning, the BMD said the deep depression is currently positioned over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Odisha coast and is likely to cross the Indian coastline by Monday evening.

The department has advised maritime ports to display Local Cautionary Signal No. 3, while river ports have been asked to hoist Signal No. 1.

Meteorologist Md Hafizur Rahman said the weather system is moving towards the Indian coast, limiting its direct impact on Bangladesh. However, its influence will increase rainfall across many parts of the country from Monday, with intermittent showers expected to continue until Thursday.

He added that heavy rainfall is possible in some areas, although the likelihood of very heavy rainfall remains relatively low.

Rain is also forecast for Dhaka and several other regions.

According to the BMD, 44–88 millimetres of rain within 24 hours is classified as heavy rainfall, while more than 88 millimetres is considered very heavy rainfall.

Earlier this month, prolonged rainfall triggered waterlogging in Dhaka, Chattogram and several other districts, while flooding affected at least nine districts, causing significant damage to agriculture.
