Deep depression weakens over Bay, signal No. 3 remains at four ports

The deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal has crossed the Indian coast and moved inland, but its remnants may still trigger gusty winds over Bangladesh’s coastal areas and the northern Bay, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said Thursday (September 24).

The weather office has asked Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports to keep hoisting local cautionary signal No. 3.

In a special bulletin signed by meteorologist Md Shahinul Islam, the BMD said the system moved west-northwestward and crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts around midnight on Wednesday.

It is now positioned as a land-based deep depression over north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining coastal areas of south Odisha. The system is expected to move further west-northwestward and gradually weaken.

Despite its weakening, gusty winds may continue over the northern Bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh. Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

The BMD said no further special bulletin will be issued on the system as it has weakened.
