Delay in passing human rights commission, enforced disappearance laws concerning: TIB
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has voiced concern over the apparent reluctance to promptly pass laws establishing an effective Human Rights Commission and preventing enforced disappearances, calling the delay “worrying”.
Speaking at a press conference at the organisation’s Dhaka office on Monday (April 6), TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman criticised the slow legislative process, saying vital laws on human rights, judicial independence, and disappearance prevention are being “treated lightly,” leaving citizens vulnerable.
He noted that out of 133 ordinances issued by the caretaker government, a special parliamentary committee recommended 98 be enacted into law, but key ordinances on the Human Rights Commission and enforced disappearance remain in uncertainty.
TIB also outlined its position on repealing or revising several other caretaker government ordinances, including those related to the Police Commission and national data management.
TIB Director Muhammad Badiuzzaman and Adviser Prof. Dr. Sumaiya Khair were present at the event.
