Depression over Bay triggers Cautionary Signal No. 3 at four sea ports

A low-pressure area has formed over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh, prompting Bangladesh’s Meteorological Department (BMD) to issue a local Cautionary Signal No. 3 for all four seaports.

In it's weather forecast issued on Wednesday (August 12), the BMD said Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been advised to keep the cautionary signal hoisted as the system could gradually intensify and trigger squally weather along the coast.

The low-pressure area is currently centred over the North Bay and adjacent coastal region. Meteorologists said strengthening of the system could increase wind speeds and make the sea rough, raising the risk of adverse weather around the ports and coastal areas.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay have been advised to proceed with caution and remain close to the coast until further notice. Authorities have also urged vessels at sea to closely monitor weather conditions.

The BMD is monitoring the system’s movement and intensity. The warning signals may be revised if the low-pressure area strengthens or changes direction.

Coastal communities and maritime operators have been advised to remain alert as gusty winds and unsettled weather could develop in the affected areas.
