Professor Syed Aktaruzzaman, chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, has said that English and mathematics are the two subjects that contribute to a higher failure rate and a lower pass rate in examinations.

He made the remarks in response to a question at a press conference held at the conference room of the Education Ministry at the Secretariat on Monday (August 10) morning on the occasion of the publication of the results of the SSC and equivalent examinations.

Syed Aktaruzzaman said, “After reviewing the results of all boards, we have found that from the time we took examinations until now, the failure rate in these two subjects—English and mathematics—has increased, while the pass rate has declined.”

The results of the SSC and equivalent examinations were published on Monday. The overall pass rate across the country this year is 62.25 per cent. A total of 116,676 students achieved GPA-5.
