Dhaka Central University ordinance passed in parliament
The Dhaka Central University Bill, 2026, aimed at improving higher education quality and resolving long-standing administrative complications by bringing seven government colleges in the capital under a common academic framework, has been passed in the National Parliament.
Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon moved the bill on Friday, April 10, with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal in the chair. It was passed by voice vote.
Under the new law, the colleges will retain their individual identities but will be academically affiliated with Dhaka Central University.
A new university has been established to oversee higher education and research at Dhaka College, Eden Women's College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College.
Students will be admitted to the main campus or affiliated colleges based on SSC and HSC results and a central admission test. MPhil and PhD programmes will be centrally offered, along with faculty development and advanced training opportunities.
These colleges were previously affiliated with the National University and were brought under Dhaka University in 2017. Students later demanded a separate university, citing academic harassment under Dhaka University. The new law fulfils that long-standing demand.
