Students of Dhaka College have blocked the capital’s busy Science Lab intersection, demanding that the college’s intermediate section be retained. The blockade began around 10:30 am on Sunday.

According to the protesters, the move comes in response to a proposed draft for establishing a “central university,” which they fear would phase out Dhaka College’s long-standing intermediate programme.

“Our demand concerns the very existence of Dhaka College,” said one student. “The college has a 184-year history. We have reviewed the draft and consulted with lawyers, even going to the Supreme Court. They told us that if this university model is implemented, the intermediate section might remain for five or ten years, but not beyond that. However, Dhaka College began with Intermediate, and we want it to continue that way.”

He further added, “Some quarters are trying to eliminate the Intermediate section through this university model. We will not allow that. Our Intermediate exists and will remain. Those who want a university model can pursue it elsewhere — but not at Dhaka College.”
