Dhaka condemns attack on Bangladeshi peacekeepers in Sudan
The Government of Bangladesh has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving under a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Abyei region of Sudan.
In a statement issued on Saturday (December 13), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Bangladesh deeply mourns the deaths of the fallen peacekeepers and extends its sincere condolences to their bereaved families. The government and people of Bangladesh also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack.
The statement added that Dhaka has requested the United Nations, through Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission in New York, to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured. The Bangladesh Mission in New York is also maintaining close coordination with the UN to ensure the safety and welfare of Bangladeshi peacekeepers deployed in the area.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), six Bangladeshi Army peacekeepers were killed and eight others injured when terrorists attacked a UN peacekeeping base in Abyei.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, in a separate statement, expressed deep sorrow and concern over the incident.
