Dhaka formally requests India to extradite former Home Minister Kamal

The Bangladesh government has formally submitted an extradition request to the Indian government for the repatriation of former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was sentenced to death in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising. A diplomatic note and relevant documents have been sent to the Indian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A source at the International Crimes Tribunal confirmed the matter on Monday (July 20). The source added that following the extradition request, the next steps will be taken in accordance with the existing legal and diplomatic framework between Bangladesh and India. The trial court's full judgement has been attached to the request to provide the necessary legal basis for the extradition process.

No formal response has yet been received from the Indian government on the matter.

In the case filed over crimes against humanity during the July-August mass uprising, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were made accused.

After a long investigation, evidence gathering and judicial process, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 delivered its verdict on November 17, 2025. The tribunal sentenced Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death after convicting them of crimes against humanity. A verdict was also delivered in the same case against former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. The formal extradition request to India is part of the legal process to bring him back to the country and implement the tribunal's verdict.
