The capital recorded 97 millimetres of rainfall over the past 24 hours, classifying the downpour as "very heavy rainfall" under the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's (BMD) rainfall scale.

According to BMD data released on Monday (July 13), any rainfall exceeding 88mm within 24 hours falls into the "very heavy" category, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing monsoon spell that has disrupted daily life across the capital.

The prolonged rain has triggered waterlogging in several parts of Dhaka, causing difficulties for commuters, office-goers and students.

The weather office forecast that rain or thundershowers are likely to continue in Dhaka and surrounding areas throughout Monday. Between 7:00am and the following six hours, skies are expected to remain cloudy to temporarily overcast, with south or southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 15 km/h. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged.

Under the BMD's rainfall classification, 1-10mm is considered light rainfall, 11-22mm moderate, 23-43mm moderately heavy, 44-88mm heavy, and more than 88mm very heavy rainfall.

At 6:00am Monday, Dhaka's temperature stood at 27.4 degrees Celsius, with 97 percent relative humidity. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while Monday's minimum temperature was 25.6 degrees Celsius.

For the rest of the country, the BMD said daytime temperatures may fall slightly, while night temperatures are expected to rise marginally under prevailing monsoon conditions.
