Dhaka soaked as downpours sweep across Country

Persistent rain has been lashing Dhaka and many parts of Bangladesh since early Saturday (August 8), disrupting the morning commute and causing widespread inconvenience for people heading to schools, colleges and workplaces.

Rain has varied from light drizzle to moderate showers across different parts of the capital, with some areas experiencing intermittent downpours.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds in most areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, many places in Rajshahi, Dhaka and Chattogram divisions, and some areas of Khulna and Barishal divisions.

The weather office has also warned of moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

According to the BMD, an extended axis of the monsoon trough currently stretches from Rajasthan through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal across central Bangladesh to Assam, with another branch extending towards the North Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon is currently fairly active over Bangladesh and remains moderate over the North Bay, conditions that are expected to sustain the rainy pattern through much of the week.

Rain or thundershowers have persisted across most parts of the country since the beginning of the week. Although an earlier extended forecast suggested that rainfall could gradually ease over the coming days, the latest conditions indicate little immediate relief for Dhaka residents.

The continuing rain has affected morning travel in the capital, with commuters facing difficulties on their way to offices and educational institutions.

The BMD said day and night temperatures across the country are likely to remain nearly unchanged on Saturday, meaning the rainy weather may continue to be accompanied by high humidity in many areas.
