Dhaka University is celebrating its 106th anniversary on Wednesday (July 1), with colourful processions, cultural events and academic programmes taking place across the campus.

The event brought together students, faculty members, alumni and staff in a festive atmosphere across the campus.

The day's celebrations began at 9:30am, when teachers, students, officers and employees from all residential halls and hostels gathered at the Smriti Chirantan square before joining a colourful procession led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam.

The rally marched through the campus, with participation from university authorities, alumni, students, teachers and administrative staff, marking more than a century of the institution's contribution to higher education in Bangladesh.

To facilitate the celebrations, the university suspended regular classes from 9:00am to 12:00pm, although all scheduled examinations continued as planned.

Authorities also imposed temporary traffic restrictions across the campus from 2:30pm to 10:00pm to ensure security and smooth conduct of the anniversary programmes.

Preparations for the event were finalised during a coordination meeting held on Tuesday at the vice-chancellor's conference room. The meeting, chaired by the vice-chancellor, was attended by the pro-vice chancellors, treasurer and conveners of various organising committees, who reviewed the overall arrangements.

Established on July 1, 1921, Dhaka University is one of Bangladesh's oldest and most prestigious public universities. This year's anniversary is being observed under the theme: "Restoring Democracy and Dhaka University in Higher Education."
