Dhaka University VC Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan resigns
Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan has resigned from his post as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University.
On Saturday (February 22), he formally submitted his resignation letter to Education Minister Ehsanul Haque Milon.
The matter was confirmed by the Vice-Chancellor’s Protocol Officer, Mohammad Firoz, who said the resignation letter was handed over to the minister in the morning.
However, no official notification has yet been issued by the Ministry of Education. Further administrative procedures will be completed in accordance with regulations once the resignation is formally accepted.
Sources at the ministry said the outgoing VC cited personal and administrative reasons behind his decision. Subject to government approval, the process for appointing a new vice-chancellor is expected to begin soon.
Earlier, at a press conference, Prof. Khan said that the emergency situation at the university had largely eased and that overall academic and administrative activities were showing an upward trend. He stated that having reached what he described as a positive phase in his tenure, he now wished to step aside.
He also emphasised the need to ensure continuity and a smooth transition in leadership. If the government and relevant stakeholders deem it necessary to avoid any administrative vacuum, he said he would be willing to continue for a limited period to facilitate the transition.
Meanwhile, a press release issued by the Public Relations Office (PRO) of University of Dhaka said that Niaz Ahmed Khan met the education minister to formally submit his resignation as vice-chancellor.
In his application addressed to the president, he sought to be relieved of his current responsibilities in order to return to his substantive position as a Grade-1 professor in the Department of Development Studies, the release said.
It added that the application followed remarks he made at a special press conference held on Tuesday.
“The education minister expressed his sincere appreciation and presented a floral tribute to the vice-chancellor in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the overall development of Dhaka University during a critical period for the country,” the statement added.
