Dhaka Medical College (DMC) has been shut down indefinitely following weeks of student protests over the deteriorating condition of the institution’s buildings.

In a notice issued on Saturday (June 21), the college authorities instructed all students to vacate residential halls by 12:00pm on Sunday. Students currently sitting for professional MBBS examinations and foreign students have been exempted from the order.

The decision came after an emergency meeting of the academic council, as tensions rose between students and the administration.

In the official notification signed by DMC Principal Professor Dr Md Kamrul Alam, the college stated that the closure was necessary to resolve the ongoing deadlock on campus. All academic activities for MBBS students will remain suspended until further notice.

The protests have been building for weeks, as students voiced serious concerns about the safety of the college's academic and residential facilities. On Friday, they submitted a memorandum to the authorities and held a sit-in protest at Milon Chattar, demanding immediate action. Among their demands were urgent alternative housing for students from abandoned hostels, allocation of a budget for new infrastructure, and transparency in development projects with representation from the student body.

The administration’s decision to close the college came just as students warned they would cease academic activities if their concerns were not addressed.
