The government has cancelled the remaining tenure of Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali's contractual appointment as Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner.

A notification to this effect was issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Sunday, March 1.

The notification stated that the interim government had appointed him as DMP Commissioner on a two-year contract on November 20, 2024. However, Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali submitted his resignation on February 25, citing 'personal' and 'family' reasons.

The notification said, "The remaining tenure is being cancelled as per his application."

Additional Commissioner (Administration) Md Sarwar will perform the duties of DMP Commissioner until a new appointment is made.

Sarwar was posted as Additional Police Commissioner of DMP from the Special Branch (SB) on January 7 last year. He subsequently became head of the Traffic division and was promoted to Additional IGP (Supernumerary) on August 11.

Earlier, on February 24, Ali Hossain Fakir was appointed as the new IGP. He was promoted from the position of Additional Inspector General (Additional IGP) of Armed Police Battalion (APBn). On the same day, the contractual appointment of Police IGP Baharul Alam was also cancelled, which had nearly nine months remaining.
