DMP suspends officer after viral video of cash transaction in lockup
A video showing a cash transaction between a police officer and a lawyer inside the lockup of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court has gone viral on social media. The accused police officer, Mir Mosharraf Hossain, has been temporarily suspended.
Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Prosecution Division Mia Mohammad Ashis Bin Hasan confirmed the matter on Monday, April 6. He said immediate action was taken against the concerned police officer after preliminary verification of the allegation and video evidence.
According to court sources, content creator RS Fahim Chowdhury was produced before the court in an attempted murder case filed at Mohammadpur Police Station over the anti-discrimination movement. After the hearing, the court ordered him to be shown arrested and sent to jail.
When he was being taken to the court lockup, a cash transaction occurred between a police officer on duty and a lawyer. A video of the incident was recorded and later spread on social media.
Police and witnesses claimed the cash transaction was intended to secure 'special facilities' for the accused.
Officer Mir Mosharraf Hossain denied the allegation, claiming the lawyer tried to force money on him to deliver food to the accused. "I did not accept any money. The matter has been misrepresented," he said.
The identity of the lawyer concerned could not be confirmed immediately.
Dhaka Bar Association General Secretary Syed Nazrul Islam said, "Whoever commits a crime must face action—whether police, lawyer or anyone else."
DMP said the matter is being investigated based on the allegation and video footage, and necessary legal action will be taken after the investigation.
