The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has announced a major change in determining liability for traffic law violations on the road. From now on, at least 50 percent of traffic cases will be filed directly against the driver instead of the vehicle owner, said Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Anisur Rahman.

At a DMP press conference, he said that in most cases, the liability of the case has been on the vehicle owner, but in reality, the driver is the one who drives the vehicle on Tuesday (June 2). As a result, many times the person actually responsible remains outside the purview of the law. The new system will change that situation.

Anisur Rahman said that if a case is filed against a driver, he will have to pay the fine, and points will also be deducted from his driving license under the demerits point system. As a result, a driver's record of law-abiding behavior will be preserved and in the future, vehicle owners will be able to verify the driver's driving history and points before hiring him.

He further said that to ensure transparency in the implementation of traffic laws, the copy of the case will have the signatures of the officials of the concerned traffic department. Along with this, the signatures of the officials of the traffic technical unit will also be attached.

Urging to be alert in case of any fake case or fraudulent communication, he said that the police will never ask for any password, OTP or secret code number.

He further said at the press conference that a special operation will be conducted very soon to check the quality of vehicle number plates. Whether the number plates are attached correctly or not, whether the writing is clear and legible or not and whether they are being used according to the rules - these issues will be investigated.
