DMTCL served legal notice over poor mobile network coverage on Metro

A legal notice has been served on Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), demanding steps to ensure uninterrupted mobile network and call services on running metro trains and at stations.

Advocate H M Rashidul Islam, general secretary of the BUBT Lawyers’ Association (BULA), sent the public-interest legal notice to the DMTCL managing director on Wednesday (September 9).

The notice called on DMTCL to allow Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi Axiata (Airtel) to install mobile network infrastructure and provide the necessary facilities within the metro rail system.

It said nearly 400,000 passengers use the metro rail every day, but weak or unavailable mobile coverage on trains and at stations often prevents passengers from making emergency calls and causes calls to drop.

The notice asked DMTCL to take the necessary measures and inform the sender in writing within 15 days.

Failure to comply within the deadline could lead to a writ petition before the High Court and other legal action in the public interest, it warned.
