Don't issue threats on streets, give advice on gas-power in parliament: Rizvi

BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has called on the opposition to present alternative plans to the government to resolve the gas and electricity crisis. He said instead of issuing threats of movement on the streets, they should provide advice in parliament on resolving the gas-power problems. The gas and electricity crisis has been caused by the international conflict and the flawed planning of the previous government.

He made these remarks at the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected executive committee of the Bangladesh Nrityashilpi Sangstha at the National Theatre Hall of the Shilpakala Academy on Friday (September 4).

Rizvi said, "You will hold long marches and announce programmes for gas and electricity—that is fine. But give us an alternative solution. Tell us how we can supply gas and electricity, where to get them, and how to get them."

He said the opposition should present a plan on what steps can be taken to overcome the current crisis. Opposition members have the opportunity to speak in parliament. While criticising the government and holding programmes outside parliament are normal democratic practices, it is also necessary to provide advice in tackling the crisis.

Rizvi said, "I think creating a planned stalemate would not be right. Rather, you have to provide a plan on how to prevent this crisis." He also commented that if the past repeats itself, the situation will move towards further darkness.

Pointing out that the gas and electricity crisis is due to the global conflict and a crisis in the energy supply system, Rizvi said obstacles to fuel transport through the Hormuz strait have created difficulties in importing necessary energy. He claimed this did not happen due to any fault of the current government.

Highlighting the role of music and dance in the July movement, he said these cultural performances instilled inspiration and courage among the protesters.

The event was chaired by Bangladesh Nrityashilpi Sangstha President Farhana Baby. Special guests included State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib, BNP Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashraf Uddin Ujjwal, actor Helal Khan, and Zakir Hossain Rukon.
