Urging the interim government to hold early elections to restore democracy in the country, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan said that it would not be logical if the government prolongs its position.

Moin Khan made these comments at a roundtable discussion titled ‘Six months of the July-August mass uprising, where are the students and the public now?’ organized by ‘The Millennium University’ at the Democracy Auditorium in Momenbagh in the capital on Monday (February 10).

Moin Khan said, ‘Lakhs of people of the country have given their lives for democracy in the last one and a half centuries. The new sunrise that has occurred in the movement of the last 24. We can never let that sun set. The joy of freedom that we enjoyed on August 5. Now, after six months, I cannot enjoy that joy.’

Moin Khan said, ‘We do not believe in the politics of revenge.’ But he commented that it is also a matter of examining why this situation has arisen today.

He said, ‘If the government prolongs its position, it will not be logical in any way. BNP had said from the beginning that the government should hold elections within a reasonable time. Hold elections quickly to protect democracy. Millions of people in the country have given their lives for democracy. And therefore the government should arrange for elections quickly.’

Meanwhile, at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club, BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, spoke as the chief guest at a discussion titled ‘31 points to repair the state structure and the future Bangladesh’ organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Cultural Foundation, demanded quick elections.

Dudu said, BNP demanded quick elections because it did not want to fall into Hasina’s trap. Many are opposing the elections. They are slandering and spreading propaganda in the name of BNP. However, BNP wants to restore the voting rights of the people of this country. It wants to destroy all conspiracies against the country.’

He said to the advisors of the interim government, ‘One person has only done development and development. And you are only doing reforms. These should be eliminated. The people’s right to vote should be restored. After the great liberation war, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman failed to hold a good election. That is why the crisis started in 1973. Martyr President Ziaur Rahman overcame that crisis. After that, national leader Begum Khaleda Zia overcame the crisis. This time, Tarique Rahman will overcome the crisis.’

BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Ziaur Rahman Foundation Director Amirul Islam Kagoji, former president of JASAS Rezabuddaula Chowdhury and others also spoke at the discussion meeting chaired by the organizing organization’s Secretary General Humayun Kabir Bepari.
