DU forms committee to probe 92 teachers over 'covert activities', 58 identified

The Dhaka University authorities have formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations of involvement in anti-state covert activities against 92 teachers. The university has said that 58 of the 92 accused teachers have already been identified.

The information was confirmed in a notification signed by Dhaka University Public Relations Department Director Mohammad Rafiqul Islam on Thursday, August 13.

The notification said the committee has been formed with Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Abdus Salam as its convener. The other two members are Professor Dr Md Mofazzal Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Professor Dr Mohammad Ikramul Haque, Dean of the Faculty of Law.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing all information regarding the accused teachers, determining the course of action, and making necessary recommendations. The committee has already started its work, the notification added.

The university authorities said a recent media report claimed that 404 teachers from 22 universities across the country are involved in covert activities with the aim of bringing back condemned fugitive convict Sheikh Hasina and reactivating a banned political party.

After the report came to the university's attention, the committee was formed to verify the matter and determine necessary action.

The report mentioned that 92 teachers from Dhaka University are involved in such activities. Of them, 58 have already been identified, the university's notification said.

The university authorities also said that if any further teachers are found to be involved in such activities in the future, the committee will also look into the matter and make necessary recommendations.

However, the notification did not specify what evidence has been found against the accused teachers or what their statements have been.
