Police have arrested AKM Jamal Uddin, a professor of sociology at University of Dhaka, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He was detained from the capital's Gulistan area on Wednesday morning (March 11) and later shown arrested in the case.

Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the media wing of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the development to media.

According to police, Jamal Uddin had announced a programme titled “Dhaka–Tungipara Bangabandhu Peace March 2026” in front of Gulistan Stadium earlier in the day and later joined the procession. He was detained from the spot and subsequently produced before a court, which ordered that he be sent to jail.

On February 15, Jamal Uddin and four others were assaulted after visiting the Bangabandhu Memorial House at Dhanmondi 32. Police at the time said they had gone there after announcing a “Gonokanna” programme on Facebook, prompting an attack by an agitated crowd before officers rescued them.

He was also involved in a tense incident on December 11 last year at the Social Sciences Faculty of University of Dhaka when he and several other teachers arrived at the campus, drawing protests from students.

Students gathered outside the faculty building, and when Jamal Uddin attempted to leave around 1:00pm, a group led by AB Jubayer chased him. A brief scuffle occurred near the staircase before he managed to leave the campus in a private car with others accompanying him.

A video of the incident later circulated on social media, showing students confronting him and questioning remarks he was alleged to have made about students.
