DU Professor forced to leave campus after student confrontation
A group of Dhaka University students on Thursday (December 11) forced Sociology Department professor AKM Jamal Uddin to leave campus after confronting and harassing him inside the Social Sciences Faculty.
The incident took place around 2:00pm, with Blue Panel–aligned Professor Jamal accompanied by by fellow teacher Professor Jinnat Huda.
Witnesses said students gathered outside the faculty building after learning of the teachers’ presence. As the two exited, students led by DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubayer chased Professor Jamal.
A video circulating on social media shows Zubayer grabbing the professor’s clothing on the department staircase. Jamal Uddin managed to break free, remove his hoodie, and run, eventually getting into a car while Zubayer attempted to stop him.
In a Facebook post, Zubayer alleged that the teachers were holding a “secret meeting” on campus, claiming that students had been boycotting classes and exams and accusing the professors of “daring to return” despite objections.
Attempts to reach Professors Jamal Uddin and Jinnat Huda for comment were unsuccessful. Zubayer also remained unreachable.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said he was off campus during the incident but acknowledged earlier tensions surrounding Professor Jamal’s presence: “Students protested before, and we advised him not to come. Still, he came today.”
He added that the allegations of a secret meeting are being reviewed after video footage showed another teacher present.
