DU professor suspended over sexual harassment allegation

Dhaka University has temporarily suspended Dr. Md. Ershad Halim, a professor in the Chemistry Department, following a preliminary findings supporting allegations of sexual harassment of students.

The decision was taken at the university’s highest policy-making body, the Syndicate, and announced on Monday (December 8).

A five-member investigation committee, led by the principal of Sir Salimullah Medical College, has been formed to probe into this matter.

The probe body includes Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Moniruzzaman, Assistant Proctor Dr. Enamul Haque Sajib, a representative of the accused professor, and the university’s Deputy Registrar (Investigation) as member-secretary.

The committee is tasked with submitting its report and recommendations within three months.

Earlier, on November 14, police arrested Dr. Ershad Halim following a student’s complaint alleging long-term sexual harassment.
