Dhaka University has temporarily suspended Sociology Professor Zinat Huda following allegations that she took a position against students during the July mass uprising and complaints lodged by students.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the university’s syndicate, its highest policymaking body, on Wednesday (September 30), following recommendations from an investigation committee.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Almujaddedi Alfeshani confirmed the decision, saying the investigation committee had recommended Huda’s temporary suspension based on the allegations. A tribunal has also been formed to investigate the matter further, with subsequent action to be determined based on its report.

Huda is currently serving as general secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association and acting convener of the university’s Blue Panel of pro-Awami League teachers.

She previously served as provost of Rokeya Hall and chairperson of the Department of Sociology, as well as an elected member of the university Senate. She was removed as department chairperson following the July-August 2024 movement.

Huda has denied the allegations, saying the disciplinary action was pre-planned and politically motivated. She has also claimed that none of the six allegations against her could be substantiated.
